Starting today, we will be operating cargo vessels for the Icelandic company "Smyril Line". The line's freighters will arrive at our terminal on a regular basis, once a week.

The mood for the start of the new year is optimistic and inspiring. The news that we have started 2023 with a new customer, a new line of cargo ships and a new additional cargo flow is the best motivation to move forward and to maintain our position as one of the leaders in the Port of Klaipėda", - Vaidotas Šileika, manager of our terminal, shares his thoughts on the successful start of the year.

 

"Smyril Line", an Icelandic company that has been operating in the cargo transportation business in the North Atlantic for more than 40 years, has arrived for the first time at our terminal and from now on it will start a consistent cargo transportation on the route Iceland-Klaipėda and Klaipėda-Iceland.

 

"The ship that brought the cargo is special because it can transport cargo in three ways at the same time: containers, Ro-Ro and palletized frozen cargo. This is not a common specification for ships, which usually carry cargo in one or two ways," - says Šileika about the special features of a cargo vess.

 

According to the terminal manager, this type of lines usually arrive with cargo in only one direction. The ship is serviced and it leaves empty. However, one of the successes of this cooperation is that it will generate a return flow for exports. This means that we will not only service the ship when it arrives with its cargo, but we will also load it, which will bring additional cargo through our terminal.

 

"Smyril Line's freighter transports frozen products exclusively in three loading options and requires dedicated infrastructure at one terminal for unloading: a ramp for semi-trailer loading, cranes for lifting and loading containers and forklifts. All the necessary infrastructure and equipment listed above are available at our terminal to service this line.

 

KKT belongs to the Klaipėda Terminal Group, a group of companies providing cargo handling, logistics, freight forwarding and ship agency services. The terminal has a total handling capacity of up to 7.5 million tonnes of cargo per year.
