Automatic gate system successfully installed at our Container terminal

We have fully automated the process of managing the flow of container trucks and implemented the first project of this scale in the Port of Klaipėda. The total value of the project is more than €1 million and the implementation time was 1.5 years.

"KCT is one of the most modern and state-of-the-art cargo terminals in the Port of Klaipėda, which is consistently digitising various processes in order to meet the competitive environment and to satisfy the growing expectations of its customers. Therefore, the installation of an automated gate system was one of the solutions to improve the quality of services at our terminal for Lithuanian industrial companies, our customers and partners. The project was implemented for several main reasons: to efficiently manage the flow of incoming and outgoing vehicles to/from the container terminal and to further improve the loading speed", says Vaidotas Šileika, General Manager of our terminal.

According to V.Šileika, the additional benefits of the automated gate system include faster receipt and release of empty containers and containers with cargo, minimized time for arrival and departure of road vehicles at the terminal and minimized manual work by eliminating the need to fill in paper documents.

The new automated gateway system connects and interacts between the actors in the logistics chain - the freight forwarder, the cargo owner, the seaport authority, customs and other parties that have a role to play in order to ensure that the container with cargo leaves/arrives at the terminal in the shortest possible time.

"We ensure smooth entry and exit of our clients' vehicles to the container terminal, but for the process to be as smooth as possible, customers must ensure that the correct data is entered into the KIPIS and VBS systems. If the data is correct in the systems, the driver will be able to enter or leave our terminal without getting out of the car," notes our CEO.

The main partner of the project is the company - Autepra, UAB.

"We are proud to have had the opportunity to use our knowledge, expertise and automation solutions to implement the automatic gate system project in KKT. This gate automation increases the throughput of the terminal gates, benefits the truck drivers, the environment and the city - the drivers arrive at the container terminal at the scheduled time, all the arrival formalities are completed in a couple of minutes without getting out of the truck, which is undoubtedly a safer environment for the drivers," says Tomas Girdzevičius, founder of Autepra, UAB, about the project.

According to Tomas Girdzevičius, it is estimated that trucks account for around 5% of Europe's greenhouse gas emissions, with the highest CO2 emissions per kilometer travelled coming from traffic jams. The installation of an automatic gate system at the terminal gates has eliminated truck traffic jams, and drivers are advised to switch off their engines while their visit is being processed in the self-service area.

The automated gate control system has been installed throughout the entire container terminal area at 8 Perkėlos Street, where containers are stored, covering a total area of 36 ha.
