We invested in renewable energy

To contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution, a 500 kW solar power plant was installed on the roofs of the warehouses of the Klaipėda Container Terminals at a cost of €350,000.

"Sustainable operations are important to us, not just on paper, so we take a responsible approach to the impact of our handling processes on climate change and invest in renewable energy sources," says Vaidotas Šileika, our CEO.

According to V.Šileika, the company plans its development investments not only in terms of operational efficiency, economic benefits or service quality improvement, but also in terms of sustainability objectives. This is one of the strategic priorities.

We expect the solar plant to generate around 12% of the electricity needed to run the terminal per year. This will result in the avoidance of the emission of around 252 t of CO2 that would have been emitted if this amount of electricity had not been generated from renewable energy sources.

A total of 1,204 photovoltaic modules have been put into operation on the roofs of the warehouses, covering a total area of 2,773 square meter's of solar power plant. The installation of the solar plant took 3 months.

Also this year, we upgraded the lighting in the container terminal area by installing a new LED lighting system. The new luminaires use less electricity, reducing energy consumption for electricity generation and, at the same time, reducing carbon dioxide emissions. We have invested around €800,000 in this new lighting system.
