Growth continues: positive results for the first half of 2025

Our terminal, which has been the leading terminal in the port of Klaipėda in terms of cargo volumes since 2023, continued its growth trajectory in the first half of 2025. The terminal handled 3.4 million tonnes of various cargoes, which is 4% more than in the same period in 2024, when cargo volumes reached 3.1 million tonnes.

For our terminal, 2024 was a year of growth in Ro-Ro and general cargo, and this trend continued in the first half of 2025. In January-June, the terminal handled 690,000 tonnes of Ro-Ro cargo, 34% more than in the same period in 2024. ‘The significant growth in Ro-Ro cargo is due to both the increasing export of Lithuanian business cargo to Scandinavian countries and the new routes of our partner ferry line TT-Line to Travemünde and Karlshamn,’ says Vaidotas Šileika, the CEO of our terminal.

General cargo throughput in the first half of 2025 amounted to - 361,000 tonnes and grew by 8% compared to the first half of 2024. "Analysing the general cargo statistics, we can see that the increase in flows was driven by specialised cargoes such as metal products, fertilisers and wind turbine kits. For example, in the first half of 2025, fertiliser cargo grew by 115% compared to the same period in 2024," says Vaidotas Šileika.

According to Šileika, Ro-Ro and general cargo volumes are also expected to grow in the second half of 2025.

The terminal handled 249,855 TEU of containers in the first 6 months of this year, which is 4% less than in the same period in 2024. "The decline in container volumes in the first half of this year was mainly due to geopolitical and economic factors - uncertain US customs policies have affected global supply chains and the declining transit traffic through the region has also affected our terminal's performance. However, we see the situation as temporary and are actively working with our customers on growth opportunities," shares Šileika's insights.

The first half of this year saw several historic moments in our business. The terminal handled its largest container vessel to date, the OOCL ST. LAWRENCE, with a length of 294 metres. This vessel loaded some 4 300 TEUs in almost 30 hours, a record in the terminal's history.

"Regardless of the size of the vessel or the volume and complexity of the cargo, we always strive for a smooth loading operation. This is the result of our experience, streamlined processes and professional team. It is no coincidence that more and more ships are choosing our terminal in the Port of Klaipėda - we have a clear ambition to continue successfully servicing the growing number of ships that call at our terminal," emphasises V. Šileika.

A significant event was also recorded at the Ro-Ro terminal, where the largest ferry of the TT-Line, the 230-metre-long Nils Holgersson, was handled for the first time. ‘The visit of the largest vessel of the TT-Line ferry line to our terminal indicates that the company is seriously considering replacing the incoming vessels to Klaipėda with larger ones due to the growing cargo and passenger flows,’ says V. Šileika.

In the first half of the year 562 ships were handled at KCT terminals.
