Stevedoring in Q1

Impact of geopolitical situation

During the first months of the year cargo transportations have been affected by a number of negative factors. Disruption of the supply chains caused by COVID pandemic was further exacerbated by the dramatic geopolitical situation sparked by the Russian invasion in Ukraine. International sanctions forced the shipping lines to revise their policies and sailing routes. Transportation of containers was affected most of all, as carriers refused to transport sanctioned cargoes and cancelled sailings to Russian ports.

On the other hand, for some market players blockage of the old routes opened unexpected possibilities to attract new cargo previously shipped through the banned ports.

In January – March cargo throughput in KCT terminals amounted to 1.4M tons, 3% below Q1 of 2021. Container volumes shrunk by 8% totalling to 97 440 TEU. But stevedoring of general cargo grew by 31% to 236,000 mt.  The upward trend in this segment is expected to continue in the following months.

Ro-ro volumes during Q1 were slightly below 2021, however, TT-Line have great future plans including new capacities and increased frequency of calls, which allows for optimistic forecast for the rest of the year
