Transhipment of Litgrid transformer

KCT input in energy projects

On May 13 KCT loaded to a barge a 163.5 t transformer. The equipment arrived on m/v Frisian Ino from General Electric factory in Turkey. This was the first of the three transformers dedicated for capacity development of LitPol Link connecting Lithuanian and Polish electric power grids.

Twin-lifting of a heavy-weight and extremely sensitive electric device by two mobile cranes was not a simple task even for very experienced KCT crane operators. Especially in the presence of numerous guests from the Ministry of Energy, Litgrid and media representatives watching the lifting operation. The transformer will be delivered to Marvele port in Kaunas by inland waterways and further transported by road to Alytus.

Lithuanian power transmission system operator Litgrid  has developed links among power transmission grids of Lithuania, Sweden and Poland. The NordBalt and LItPol Link projects are recognized as strategic projects in assuring independence of Lithuania’s power supply system and its synchronization with European power transmission grids. The target is to reach full integration of the Baltic states’ power transmission grids into European network  by 2025.

KCT has been participating in these projects since 2014, when the first two transformers dedicated for Klaipeda link of NordBalt, the power bridge between Sweden and Lithuania, were reloaded at the ro-ro terminal. At that time assistance of a floating crane was needed for lifting the 196 t equipment. Since acquisition of the second Liebherr mobile crane (124 t) similar cargoes have been handled by own capacity.

Today both KCT terminals are properly equipped for handling heavy-weight OOG cargoes. The volume of such cargoes reloaded since the beginning of the year amounts to 40,000 tons.
