Arrival of a new STS crane
The investment will boost capacities
On April 29 KCT container terminal welcomed a new STS gantry crane, the first of the two cranes ordered from KONECRANES, one of world leaders in crane manufacturing. Mounted on a special barge, the fully assembled crane was delivered from the production site in Hanko, Finland. Commissioning of the crane is planned in a month‘s time, after due testing and training of operators.
The second crane of the same type will be delivered in the middle of the year. Financing for this project is provided by OP Finance, Lithuanian branch of OP Corporate Bank plc group, technical consulting – by Mobile Heavy Machinery, partner of KONECRANES in Lithuania.
The new crane is much bigger and more powerful than the two gantries currently used. 65 t lifting capacity provides for twin-lifting of two 20’ boxes. The 53 m. boom can reach 19 container rows on board. Max. hoisting height 42 m equals to 14 tiers above deck.
Crane parameters were selected in view of larger ships tendency set in during the last few years, the new cranes will be ready to serve Post-Panamax class vessels. The just in time renovated terminal quay added new possibilities for mounting the powerful gantries and berthing much larger tonnage. The state-of the-art cranes will boost the vessel handling efficiency and shorten their turnaround time. Moreover, the electric-powered cranes will help KCT achieve the environmental goal of reducing the CO2 footprint. It is estimated that replacement of mobile harbour cranes in sea-to-shore operations with zero-emission gantries will cut CO2 emissions from crane operations up to 70%.
Terminal development and investment programme includes acquisition of two more similar gantries in the coming years.
